Vendor Biography

Thokchom Sony is a New Delhi and Imphal based visual artist. He has a bachelor’s degree in Applied Arts from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi and holds a post graduate diploma in Animation and VFX from AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre, Jamia. He has worked for various publishing house in his early career as a freelance illustrator. He has worked as a guest faculty in AJKMCRC, Jamia from 2014 to 2020. He had participated and worked with Art For Change Foundation, New Delhi in various artist residencies across India. He has exhibited his works in Imphal, New Delhi, Mussorie, Gurgaon and Mumbai.

In art he found his voice to express, connect, communicate and heal. Being an artist from Manipur, he tells stories steaming from his root and culture through his watercolor portraitures. 

His practice includes exploring the wild, observing and interacting the activities of the insects and birds with the surrounding nature as well as foraging and preparing dishes with the wild ingredients. He believes nature provides in abundance and it gives so much richness and nourishment to our body, mind and soul.

The “Growing Wild” series is about his journey back to his roots and learning the collective connections of the Indian tribal communities through woven textiles, traditions and cultures.

The series is about re-learning about ourselves, the land, biodiversity and to seek our purpose and connection to the natural world.

The green hair color symbolizes the force of life and wisdom in nature. The “Sandrembi” (golden tortoise beetle) symbolizes his inner child’s curiosity and nostalgic memories.
